Ultraviolet

Ultraviolet is the military power of City Zero, ruling alongside the Pale and the Chromacy.

.purpose

Ultraviolet is responsible and has complete responsability over anything and everything related to the FLIPSIDE. This includes exploration, research and development, and neutralising any threats that could pose a threat to themselves or to City Zero, lethally or not. They can extend into civilian matters, if there is suspicion of FLIPSIDE interference of any kind, such as a dimensional breach, or under payment.

.structure

Ultraviolet has a loose hierarchy, on top of which sits the Pale executive, acting as personal handler to each and every Ultraviolet Operator. The Executive is responsible with assigning and negotiating missions, providing briefing and intelligence, dealing with reports and other bureaucracy, and granting political and legal shielding, such as the explicit freedom of movement outside of City Zero. Most Ultraviolet contracts are consequently for the Pale, although anyone can request assistance for a fee and permission from the Executive.

The Operator hierarchy is based on strength, with the Captains being the demonstrably most powerful Operators in the organisation. There are only ever three Captains at a time, and each is in charge of their own Division of Ultraviolet. named after them. Informally, all Captains are placed just below the Executive in the Pale’s hierarchy, and are publicly seen as celebrities or heroes within City Zero. These Divisions do not have an individual specialisation, instead focusing on whatever the Captain in charge wants to focus. All Operators are chosen by the Captains during recruitment and placed within their Division, and they can change Division if both Captains agree. If a Captain spot becomes vacant, the next strongest person automatically inherits the role. The ranking is constantly being updated by the Executive, the only person aware of its existence, and only the top 3 are public knowledge.

Civilians can apply or be recruited by a Captain to become an Operator. Training is provided within Ultraviolet, and licensing and pay are issued by the Executive. While extensive injury coverage is provided, a majority of Operators have the ability to regenerate, which makes it unnecessary in most cases. Operators can resign whenever, and are forcefully retired around age 50. Working as an Operator independently, without being members of Ultraviolet, is illegal and will be subjected to severe punishment by a legitimate Operator.

.conduct

Ultraviolet makes great usage of the Signal Stations outside City Zero, intercepting threats way before they reach civilians. However, should something reach the city, Operators are instructed to prioritise the safety of civilians, even if it involves other civilian casualties. Hybrids are also limited in activation due to increased risk of Chromic Rot. Different species require different approaches:

  • Most non-sapient Daemons are lured into relocation cages, which are then released far away from City Zero.
  • Sapient Daemons are first engaged diplomatically, resorting to aggression only if peaceful negotiations fail. Capture is preferred over execution, and in the case of vespers, usage of vessels.
  • devils are always KoS.

In case of a dimensional breach, Operators are sent on-site to determine the type of breach and Daemon that could cause it. After those parameters are determined, they will attempt to prevent the breach. Should this fail, it will be treated as a regular engagement. In the FLIPSIDE, Operators are instructed to engage only if engaged first, and to avoid any unnecessary actions that could draw unwanted attention, but otherwise anything goes. Missions are all times surveyed by the Executive.
